a stair leading to a subterranean corridor under the main porch of the Accademia 3. a Cryptoporticus in the Accademia substructures and other subterranean corridors 2. We also identified three main groups of subterranean tunnels: 1. In 2005-2006 we started a survey to draw a new plan of the Accademia with Total Station and Laser scanner, and we were able to correct several mistakes both in ancient and modern plans. Ancient plans proved to be extremely useful to reconstruct the network of subterranean galleries built for supply and service under the Accademia and the rest of the Villa: one of the most fascinating and unique features of this archaeological site. The older ones are very important for our study because they show details and walls that are not visible today: just one third of the building is still standing and preserved. We collected all previous plans, from the XV to the XXI centuries. Information needs to be updated, since ancient and modern plans mostly copied the one by Piranesi, published in 1781. The Accademia Pilot Project concerns one of the lesser known buildings of Hadrian’s Villa near Tivoli (Rome), the Accademia, which is still in private property and it is not open to the public. The data of the survey were compared with the data of previous ancient and modern plans of the Accademia, noting inaccuracies, errors but also surprising correspondences with the plan by Piranesi. The Project Academy has surveyed for the first time the Accademia (Academy) of Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli with Total Station and Laser Scanner. This article was published in the Proceedings of the Conference "Historic Maps and imagery for Modern Scientific Applications", held in Berne, Switzerland, on 28-30 November 2008.
